About us
The National Water Development Agency (NWDA) is an autonomous Indian society under the Ministry of Jal Shakti. Established in July 1982, its primary function is to study and develop India's water resources, particularly focusing on the interlinking of rivers. The NWDA was formed to give shape to the Peninsular River Development Component of the National Perspective Plan, later taking on the Himalayan Component as well.
It prepares feasibility reports for both the Peninsular and Himalayan river development components, which include studies and surveys of reservoir sites and interconnecting links. Since 2006, the NWDA has also been tasked with exploring the feasibility and preparing detailed project reports (DPRs) for intra-state river links. Its functions have been expanded to include implementing interlinking of river (ILR) projects and completing water resource projects under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana (PMKSY). The agency can act as a repository for borrowed funds or loans for project execution.
